The St. Petersburg SKА hockey club is considering the possibility of expanding its «Hockey City» sports complex, which adjoins Yablonevsky Garden. The club«s official website published the corresponding information on January 28 following a meeting of the board of directors.
«With the aim of improving the material and technical base, the club»s management has been instructed to develop proposals for expanding the sports complex «Hockey City» for the needs of hockey teams in the system and students of the ASNO «SKА Academy» schools,« the SKА message states.

At the same meeting, other initiatives aimed at developing children«s hockey were approved:

  • strengthening support for all schools included in the SKА Academy system;
  • expanding the academy»s presence in five new regions of Russia;
  • organizing an annual «Gazprom Cup» tournament among children«s teams in St. Petersburg.
Which specific territories will be used for the expansion is not specified. The complex is bordered on three sides by Rossiysky Prospekt, Latyshskikh Strelkov Street, the Okkervil River, and the Ice Palace, and on the fourth side directly by Yablonevsky Garden.
Yablonevsky Garden, located in the Nevsky District, has long been an object of close public attention. Until the end of the 1970s, a waste dump operated on its site, after the closure of which the territory was reclaimed and turned into a landscaped green area.
In 2020, the old dump was included in the federal register of accumulated harm objects, with a decision made for its re-reclamation according to modern standards. The project involves large-scale work on most of the garden. Some residents fear that this will damage the local ecosystem, and new landscaping will not compensate for the loss of old trees subject to cutting.
St. Petersburg Vice Governor Alexei Korabelnikov, during a TASS press conference on January 22, assured that after reclamation, the garden will become a modern public space with improved ecology. He explained that conducted studies confirmed the harmful impact of the dump, so it is necessary to install anti-filtration screens and a gas drainage system.
