On February 4, a boy weighing 7 kilograms 60 grams (15 lb 9 oz) and measuring 70 centimeters (2 ft 4 in) was born at Perinatal Center No. 1 in Volzhsky.
According to the Volgograd Oblast Health Committee, the delivery was natural. The mother and child are feeling well. The newborn is the third child in the family — he has an older brother and sister.
Tatiana Verovskaya, the region«s chief external obstetrician-gynecologist, said that the birth of such a large infant involves high risks. »Giving birth to a 7-kilogram (15.4 lb) baby naturally is a sheer miracle, because in fact, delivery with a large fetus weighing more than 5 kilograms (11 lb) always carries great risks for the mother in terms of uterine and perineal ruptures, and colossal risks for the child. With natural delivery, a complication such as shoulder dystocia—a delay in the birth of the shoulders—often occurs, which is dangerous due to hypoxia. A clinically narrow pelvis of the mother is a situation that can indeed threaten uterine rupture and asphyxia of the child,« says Tatiana Verovskaya.
The specialist noted that such weight is a deviation from the norm and is often linked to the mother«s health condition. »Most often this happens when mothers have diabetes mellitus, whether gestational or classic, and extremely, extremely rarely when there are some constitutional features. As a rule, the cause is the mother«s diabetes,» says Dr. Verovskaya.
«It is precisely in this condition that large babies develop. I cannot say anything about this baby»s condition because I do not have data on his tests or those of his mother. I want to believe that the baby is healthy, and I wish him and his mother a speedy recovery.«
At the same medical facility in 2024, another case of a large baby was recorded—weighing 4 kilograms 150 grams (9 lb 2 oz).
