Schools to play patriotic songs during breaks

In Russian schools, traditional break bells will be replaced by patriotic music in February, coinciding with Defender of the Fatherland Day. The announcement was made by the St. Petersburg Education Committee.

On February 4, the St. Petersburg Education Committee announced a musical initiative for schools across the country. In educational institutions where technically feasible, standard break signals will be replaced with themed melodies for the month.

«In schools where technically possible, students will hear both Soviet hits and modern songs. The music will remind children of the importance of their ancestors« feat and the significance of defending the Motherland,» the committee’s statement said.

The list of compositions that may be played in schools includes:
  • Defenders of Russia (lyrics and music by Elena Obukhova, performed by Olga Bykova),
  • A Young Sailor Goes on Leave (lyrics by Viktor Bokov, music by Alexander Averkin, performed by Lyudmila Zykina),
  • The Crew Is One Family (lyrics by Yuri Pogorelsky, music by Viktor Pleshaka, performed by VIA Samotsvety),
  • I Vote for Life (lyrics and music by Denis Maidanov, performed by Denis Maidanov, the First Choir, and the Domisolka Children«s Music Theatre).
The musical project is dedicated to several February commemorative dates: Defender of the Fatherland Day, the Day of the Defeat of Nazi Troops in the Battle of Stalingrad, and Russian Science Day.
