First reports of a possible sale of the spacious neoclassical hall appeared in December 2025. At that time, the company was only exploring the possibility, but in early February 2026, it was reported that employees had been given until the end of the month to vacate the premises.
The purpose of the premises after the post office«s relocation remains unclear.

An official response from Russian Post confirmed the intention to sell the property. In a statement, the organization said: «It is planned that the post office will move to a neighboring premises in the same building. Its address will remain the same — 9 Mira Street. Renovations are currently underway in that space. The move is tentatively scheduled for April 2026.»

The reason given for the sale is the excessive size of the hall for the postal service«s needs. Part of the Main Post Office building will be put up for auction in the near future.
The company explained its decision: «The building is a cultural heritage site; its maintenance and renovation are not a core activity of the company, and its adaptation requires large investments given the strict requirements for preserving its historical appearance.»
The Volgograd Main Post Office is not the only facility that Russian Post will vacate. In 2026, the historic post office in Chita, which had operated as the main post office since 21 November 1893, will pass into private hands. The St. Petersburg Main Post Office has already been sold to Moscow-based firm EMHO for 1.5 billion rubles ($15,789,500 at current rates). Earlier, the Committee for the Protection of Monuments had filed a lawsuit regarding the need for restoration of the building, and in January 2026 it was added to the Register of Non-Core Assets.
