Russian Post (Pochta Rossii) plans to put the rotunda of the main post office in the historic center of Volgograd up for auction. The postal facility will exchange the space, which includes a Lenin monument, for less spacious premises.

The bright Russian Post sign contrasts with the classical columns of the rotunda.

The first news that the vast classical hall would go under the hammer appeared in December 2025. At that time, Russian Post stated it was only «considering sale options». Yesterday new rumors began: employees were reportedly told to pack up and given a deadline until the end of February.

The rotunda«s generous space was deemed excessive for the postal operator.

The V1.RU editorial office sent an official inquiry and today received a response: the main post office will be sold.

Maintaining and restoring the heritage building proved non-essential for Russian Post.

— «It is planned that the post office will move to a neighboring room in the same building. Its address will remain the same — 9 Mira Street. Renovation is currently underway there. The move is tentatively scheduled for April 2026,» said the official response from Russian Post.

What will replace the post office in the historic building remains unknown.

The reason given for the sale was the excess space of the hall for Russian Post employees. Part of the main post office building will be put up for auction shortly.

Russian Post designated the historic Chita main post office as a non-core asset.

— «The building is a cultural heritage site; its maintenance and renovation are not part of the company«s core business, and its adaptation requires large investments given the strict requirements for preserving the historic appearance,» the organization explained its decision.
The Volgograd main post office is not the only casualty of postal optimization. In 2026, the historic Russian Post office in Chita (Zabaykalsky Krai, Siberia), which began operating as the main post office on 21 November 1893, will also go into private hands.
And the main post office in St. Petersburg has already been auctioned off for 1.5 billion rubles ($16.7 million at current rates) to the Moscow firm «EMKHO». In 2025, the Committee for the Protection of Monuments filed a lawsuit demanding the restoration of the building; in January 2026, it was added to the Register of Non-Core Assets.
