In Rostov-on-Don, part of the Temernik clothing market has temporarily ceased operations. The governor called it a hotbed of crime, sparking debate among residents.

Opinions are divided. Some residents believe that the market, which existed for over 30 years, was in demand, and its closure is related to freeing up land for housing development. Others support the decision, claiming that Temernik has turned into a «snake pit» with a high level of crime. A third group thinks that after resolving issues with documents, trade will resume.

Residents of Rostov-on-Don share their opinions on the temporary closure of the Temernik market.

“It«s right that they closed it: where there»s migration, there«s crime. And migrants should be dispersed, illegals, all deported.”
“Better to have construction of a residential complex than this snake pit… I live nearby, I«ve experienced all the charms of the market, and I haven»t been there for 5 years. I«m disgusted.”
“Even if fashionistas are rejoicing now, let«s be honest: who didn»t buy clothes there in childhood? It«s a legendary spot for all of Rostov.”
“The market is over 30 years old. If it weren«t relevant, it wouldn»t have survived until today. Did they really sell and buy to themselves? So, there are categories of people who bought there. It«s easier to close than to bring order, that»s a fact. Why should the authorities solve such a problem… Well, and the land for development hasn«t been canceled either.”
“The market dictates the rules. It works, so it«s relevant. Again, someone needs the land. Thousands of people will be left without work.”
“Order will be restored, smuggling and crime have no place there.”
“They closed the part that had no documents or expired documents. Everything«s okay, they»ll do it — and continue to work, but now according to the law.”
“The last time I was at the Temernik market was 14 years ago. I bought a fishing rod as a gift and other fishing gear. Since then, neither I nor my acquaintances have visited this market. From which I conclude: for city dwellers, it«s little in demand. But sellers from stanitsas (Cossack villages) and districts come there to stock up, they take cheap knitwear, work clothes, shoes and then sell from cars in the stanitsas — that»s the only thing, I think, that this market is useful for and to whom.”
According to bailiffs, only the «Pravy Temer» and «Bely Temer» sectors have been closed, where sellers were operating in violation of the law. The «Vostochny» market continues to function.
