Last year, the Northern Railway continued its course to minimize the negative impact of production activities on the environment. Emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere from stationary sources were reduced by 4.7% compared to 2024. The discharge of insufficiently treated wastewater decreased by 2.1%.

130 tons of paper, plastic, and other waste were sent for recycling. As a result of the monthly corporate campaign «Green Friday», railway workers saved 51.8 thousand kWh of electricity, 23.4 tons of coal, gasoline, diesel fuel, and fuel oil.
The operations of Northern Railway enterprises utilize energy-efficient solutions and eco-friendly technologies. These include alternative fuels, gentle wastewater treatment methods, rational resource use, adherence to technological processes in the operation of facilities and equipment, and conducting scheduled maintenance work.
For example, to reduce the environmental load, boiler houses at more than 20 stations of the Northern Railway switched to eco-friendly fuel in 2023–2025. In Yaroslavl Oblast last year, boiler houses at railway facilities at Pishchalkino and Tikhmenovo stations started operating on electricity instead of coal. This not only helps reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere but also eliminates the labor-intensive process of delivering and loading/unloading coal.
At Danilov station, railway workers reconstructed a fuel oil boiler house. It was converted to gas by replacing equipment and laying a gas pipeline. The use of gas heating will reduce emissions by 34.8 tons per year.
The Northern Railway conducts regular monitoring of the environmental situation and how railway enterprises affect it. In 2025, specialists from the united environmental laboratory of the Northern Railway«s Environmental Protection Center conducted 10.6 thousand analyses of atmospheric air, wastewater, drinking water, soils, and measurements of noise and vibration levels.
