The world first saw Reshona Landfair as a minor on a questionable recording, but viewers did not know the most shocking fact — at the time of filming, she was 14 years old and a virgin. Now, at 43, the woman is shedding the label «Jane Doe», under which she appeared in court, and personally describes what the singer took from her.

A native of Chicago, who rapped in the family group 4 the Cause in her youth, fell into Kelly«s nightmarish orbit in the mid-1990s after he became close with her musically ambitious relatives. Mentorship from the global star turned into a secret role as a »godfather«, and then — into abusive relationships that lasted over a decade.

Prosecutors described a system of isolation and coercion during the trials.

In her new memoir and first detailed interview, Landfair states that the illegal recording, which later formed the basis of the criminal case, captured the moment when he took her virginity. This left her living with a public stigma she did not choose.

In her book, Reshona painfully recalls that night. She writes that by the time the recording began, she was a confused teenager, with her consciousness clouded by champagne that Kelly persistently offered her. She was still a child and a virgin. In the following years, pirated copies of the tape were sold on the streets and became the subject of jokes. To the world, she was «R. Kelly»s girl«. To herself — a frightened minor teenager whose first sexual experience was recorded and distributed for others» entertainment.

Landfair describes how Kelly«s control intensified. She recalls secret calls and constant assurances that their connection was special and voluntary, even when she was forced to perform actions she did not understand. Behind the scenes, she says, punishments could be brutal — the singer recorded himself beating her until she bled. All this time, the recording of his abuse of a 14-year-old virgin, as she emphasizes, was presented in courts.

Kelly«s crimes were detailed in courtrooms from New York to Chicago. Jurors heard how for years the singer used fame, money, and his circle to select underage girls, isolate them from family and friends, and coerce them into sexual acts that he sometimes filmed. Prosecutors described a system in which teens and young women were ordered to ask permission to eat or use the toilet, and were taught to address him with humiliating, childish words. Kelly, once proclaimed a musical hero, is now serving lengthy federal sentences for racketeering, sex trafficking, and creating child pornography materials.

At the center of this scheme, Landfair asserts, is the girl she was during the first filming. Understanding that she was a virgin that day is key to grasping the scale of his violation — not only of her consent, but of her entire childhood. For years, she refused to watch the recording, forcing herself to do so only before testifying against Kelly in 2022.

«There is no job I could get where this wouldn»t be at the forefront of my life — no relationship where this wouldn«t be at the forefront,» she says about the impact of this case on her personal life. She felt she was losing strength and decided: if everything is laid bare, she won«t have to explain anything anymore or fear whispers behind her back.

The book is her attempt to ensure the girl in that video is seen not as a dirty secret or a joke, but as a child whose first sexual experience was used against her. After decades of shortening her name to «Chon» to remain unrecognized, she has finished hiding. «I was afraid to say my name and be myself at work, with friends,» she states. «But today I am here as Reshona.»

The illegal video of 14-year-old Reshona reached music critic Jim DeRogatis, whose exposé reports helped initiate the first child pornography case against the rapper. About her decision to publicize her story now, Landfair says: «This was my final chapter in letting go of this situation, freeing myself, my family from it, and no longer remaining in Robert»s shadow. I just really wanted to convey that I was a person. I had dreams and aspirations. I wasn«t just »R. Kelly«s girl».«
