In the Rostov Region, thousands of residents were left without water and heating due to a series of accidents on utility networks. The most difficult situation was in the cities of Gukovo and Zverevo, as well as in the settlements of Krasnosulinsky and Kamensky districts, where water supply was absent for five days.
The cause of the disruptions was two consecutive accidents on the pipeline. Bottled water quickly ran out in stores, and people lined up in long queues for the arriving water tankers.
Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin ordered a criminal case to be opened over the incident. Although water supply has been restored in most affected areas, some residents still cannot use their taps.
On the morning of January 21, part of the city of Novoshakhtinsk was also left without water due to a new accident.
Alongside water supply issues, many residents of Rostov-on-Don complained about insufficient heating. In their apartments, the temperature did not rise above 17–18 degrees Celsius (63–64°F). Authorities recommended filing complaints with management organizations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, upon receiving information about the situation, demanded that Minister of Construction and Housing and Communal Services Irek Faizullin report on it. «In these towns, which we know about, in the Rostov Region, people were left without water supply, without heat. What is the state of affairs? Please tell me again,» said the head of state.
