Well-known priest Pavel Ostrovsky visited Tyumen and encountered a lack of mobile internet there. He reported this on his Telegram channel.

«The city lives without mobile internet (my two SIM cards from MegaFon and MTS did not work). Telegram via the hotel»s WiFi only worked using a VPN. It«s the 21st century, but our officials are sending us back to the analog era,» Ostrovsky wrote.

In his view, from a spiritual perspective, this might even be good. He argues that it provides more opportunities for «reflection.»

«But from all other perspectives, as a person who is definitely an opponent of revolutionary solutions, I was alarmed by the feeling of how much protest potential is being created out of thin air with our own hands,» the priest added.

If the lack of internet is indeed the solution to creating a «sovereign internet,» then there is logic overall, he noted. After all, no one will be able to disconnect us from the global network, Ostrovsky added, because we have already started doing it ourselves.

In Tyumen, restrictions on mobile internet have been in place for a long time. Authorities say this is for security.
