On the night of February 5, around 00:15, a significant portion of Chita was left without power, according to a previous report. The outages affected the area from the city center to the gardening cooperatives (SNT) beyond Smolenka and Ugdan.
As Andrei Chebykin, director of the Chita Generation branch of PJSC TGK-14 (Territorial Generating Company No. 14), told Chita.ru, an emergency situation occurred at CHP-1, resulting in some consumers being disconnected. According to preliminary data from the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM), the accident was caused by cable overload on a turbogenerator. TGK-14 itself reported that the incident occurred during testing of a new turbogenerator. After the accident, Chebykin provided details of what happened.
During the night, the governor of Zabaykalsky Krai, Alexander Osipov, held an emergency meeting with the management of Chita CHP-1 and sent Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Goncharov and First Vice-Governor Alexander Kostenko to the scene.
