The Perm-based animal shelter «Happy Tail» shared the unusual rescue story of one of its wards, a cat named Kovrik (Rug). Once a starving kitten surviving in a basement and on a heating main, he has now moved to Cyprus with his new owners. Before this, the cat managed to live in other countries.

The head of the «Happy Tail» shelter, Iya Esaulova, told 59.RU that in 2020, a five-month-old, emaciated kitten was found on a heating main.

«That»s where he lived, on the heating main, zero socialization, all patchy, hungry, confused about the litter box,« Iya recalls.

The kitten was rather wild and covered in fleas. At the shelter, he would often sit curled up in a ball. The foundling was named Kovrik. In early posts about the ginger stray, volunteers wrote: «Do you know why he was named Kovrik (Rug)? His fur is like that, stiffly curly, maybe some Cornish Rex roots in his ancestry, who knows. The little guy isn»t mean at all, he«s just scared. And his defense is a stern look and a menacing hiss. And when you pet him, he clams up. He needs a person with a big heart and a reserve of patience.»

Soon, new owners were found for the little one—a young couple. He was taken as a second pet and became friends with the older cat quite quickly. Every year, his new owner sends greetings from Kovrik to the shelter. Now his name is Buffy.

«Buffy got to live almost two years in Israel and then moved to Berlin,» his owner wrote to the shelter. «He is the most affectionate cat in the world, adores his personal little bed and tries to steal my armchair, loves to sleep on everyone at once, and to pester his introvert cat-sister. I»m so proud that the cat who used to hide under the sofa at the sound of strangers« footsteps now runs to meet guests! He stopped devouring his entire portion of food all at once, loves meeting new people, and immediately offers his belly for rubs. It»s wonderful that his trust in the world has been restored.«

As the shelter told, Kovrik-Buffy has now moved with his owners to warmer climes—to Cyprus. The owner of the ginger fluffball still periodically sends photo greetings of their former ward to the shelter.
