Perks and 200,000: Kazan Snow Removal Job Salaries Revealed

The lowest salaries are most often offered by government institutions. For instance, Gymnasium No. 50 will allocate from 23,000 rubles ($256) monthly for a street sweeper. They promise a flexible work schedule.
The Republican Children«s Home posted a cleaner vacancy, but in fact requires the employee to also perform security guard duties: patrolling the territory, checking locks and seals. With a schedule of »one night shift every three days,« they promise to pay 15,000 rubles ($167).
Kindergarten No. 81 has a larger budget for street sweeping services — from 38,000 to 42,000 rubles ($422-$467). The list of duties is standard: clearing snow and ice from the grounds, and in summer — watering flower beds and mowing grass.
Commercial companies often offer higher salaries. For example, the cosmetics manufacturer «Parli» is looking for a street sweeper for a 10-hour shift on a 5-day schedule for 55,000 rubles ($611). The set of duties is typical for a street sweeper.
The LED lighting production plant, the R&D enterprise «Dionys,» is ready to pay a worker 68,900 rubles ($766). Besides a shovel and broom, he will be entrusted with a snowplow.
The thermal complex «Beach» offers a street sweeper from 55,000 to 63,000 rubles ($611-$700). In winter, he is required not only to remove snow but also to spread de-icing agents on roads. As «perks,» they promise free meals and free access to the thermal baths.
Those who can handle special equipment are promised higher pay — from 80,000 rubles ($889). This sum will go to a tractor driver who will use a mini-loader to clear snow and leaves from the courtyards of 2 buildings.
The Kazan mayor«s office is looking for a driver-mechanic whose duties include clearing roads of snow and operating a tractor or special equipment. The schedule here is stricter — 6 working days. However, the salary is from 100,000 rubles ($1,111).
The Municipal Unitary Enterprise «City Improvement» is even ready to pay a grader operator 150,000-200,000 rubles ($1,667-$2,222) per month. This is the highest salary in this category. The motor grader driver will have to pile snow into windrows in the Novo-Savinovsky and Aviastroitelny districts, and in summer — level gravel. The employer promises assistance in obtaining a social mortgage and housing for non-residents.
«City Improvement» also wants to hire a loader operator for 90,000-120,000 rubles ($1,000-$1,333).
Earlier, the Kazan executive committee complained that during snowfalls, street sweepers do not show up for work in full force. The authorities asked utility services and management companies to analyze why this is happening.
The shortage of street sweepers is a long-standing problem in Kazan. For example, on the eve of this winter, the capital of the republic was short of as many as 800 street sweepers. Due to the intense schedule during heavy snowfalls, the number of workers decreases by another 20-25%.
