Northern Lights, Light Pillars, and Halo Observed in St. Petersburg

On January 28, residents of St. Petersburg witnessed a whole series of rare atmospheric phenomena — northern lights, light pillars, and a halo around the sun.

Thursday, January 28, was remembered by St. Petersburg residents for unusual optical phenomena. At night and in the early morning hours, northern lights and vertical light pillars were observed in the sky, and late in the morning the sun was surrounded by a bright halo.
These luminous arcs, or halo, around the solar disk were captured by a local resident named Leonid.
The clear weather that made it possible to see all these phenomena was established due to the influence of an anticyclone. It also provided the city with a colorful sunrise. According to forecasts, a period of colder weather will follow, lasting several days.
