On the morning of January 27, a powerful snowfall began in Nizhny Novgorod. It is expected that by nightfall, more than 20 centimeters of snow will have fallen. What is happening in the city now and what forecasts are meteorologists giving — in the material from NN.RU.

A snow cyclone from Europe reached Central Russia today. In Moscow, about 20% of the monthly precipitation norm fell overnight, said Mikhail Leus, a specialist from the Phobos weather center. The authorities of Nizhny Novgorod expect that in the next four days, more than 70 centimeters of snow will fall in the city.

«Considering that in the current month, 171% (!) of the monthly norm has already fallen, this January has certainly secured its place in the top of the snowiest. By this indicator, we have significantly surpassed Moscow and Kazan, which also suffered from the snow cyclone during the New Year holidays,» noted Mayor Yury Shalabaev.

The administration reported that equipment and crews are already at work. First of all, they will clear snow on the highways. Residents are asked not to leave cars on the shoulders. According to online maps, six-point traffic jams persist in the city: movement is hampered, including due to accidents. For example, in the morning on Pokhvalinsky Descent, according to eyewitnesses, a truck «got stuck on the ascent.»

«Went out to walk the dog, almost got blown away,» shared NN.RU reader Evgeny.

«We didn»t have enough snow at the beginning of the month,« Alexander exclaimed indignantly.

According to meteorologists, on Friday, frost will return to Nizhny Novgorod. The air temperature will drop to -16 degrees Celsius (3 degrees Fahrenheit).
