Nizhny Novgorod Glows in Rare Winter Sunset Photos

This January in Nizhny Novgorod has been overcast and unusually snowy. We have seen the city buried in snowdrifts, adorned with frosty lace and rare ice flowers, but we had nearly forgotten how beautiful it looks in the rays of the setting winter sun. Today, the weather finally allowed us to remember why Nizhny is called the capital of sunsets. NN.RU photojournalist Natalya Burukhina took an evening stroll and snapped several mesmerizing shots.

Gloomy weather is set to return to Nizhny Novgorod soon, as a powerful snowfall approaches the city and is expected to last several days. Forecasts indicate it will begin on Tuesday, January 27. Mayor Yuri Shalabayev stated that over 70 cm (28 inches) of snow could fall in a short period.

Incidentally, January«s monthly precipitation norm has already been exceeded. By this measure, Nizhny Novgorod outpaces Moscow and Kazan, where heavy snowfalls also occurred during the New Year holidays.
