According to estimates by Yaroslavl authorities, the new cemetery planned for Gagarin Street will be sufficient for three to five years. Deputy Mayor Alexander Chernevsky announced this information on 4 February at a municipality meeting.
Directly for burials, 20 hectares will be allocated out of a total area of 27 hectares. The remaining territory is designated for a 300-meter sanitary protection zone. Plans include landscaping the site and building an access road. As Chernevsky clarified, construction of a columbarium at the new cemetery is not envisaged.
The burial ground will be located near house No. 74A on Gagarin Street, not far from the Yartekhuglerod stop. At the end of 2025, the city administration submitted an application for design to the Regional Design Institute. The finished documentation is expected to be obtained by the end of 2026.
«Funds have been allocated for survey work and the development of the sanitary protection zone,» added Alexander Chernevsky.
Initially, five sites were considered for the facility, both within the city limits and in the Yaroslavsky District. Some of these plots continue to be studied for potential future use.
Earlier, in autumn 2022, the Yaroslavl Region allocated land for a cemetery near Prokhorovskoye village. However, in June 2025, this idea was abandoned because it was impossible to organise burials on the allocated site due to an inability to comply with sanitary norms.
In December 2025, Yaroslavl residents began collecting signatures against the placement of the new city cemetery in the Gagarin Street area.
