New Ice Arena in Nizhny Novgorod Opens This Year

Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Gleb Nikitin said on Match TV that the Torpedo hockey club will start the 2026/2027 season at the new ice arena. According to him, the ice palace on the Strelka will «definitely» open this year, as construction work is almost complete.

«More will probably depend on the club and its readiness to move at some point. We need all, excuse my language, the loose ends to be tied up. Because basically all construction work is complete, that is 99.9%. We will definitely start the new season at the new arena,» Nikitin told Match TV.

Currently, Torpedo plays its matches at the Nagorny Sports and Entertainment Complex on Gagarin Avenue, where, as the governor noted, the team is «impossibly cramped.» Earlier, Nikitin spoke about the possibility of a match between Torpedo and Detroit. The governor clarified that his proposal is not limited to Detroit: if a decision is made on reciprocal matches between NHL and KHL clubs, Nizhny Novgorod hopes to host such games at the new arena.
