On January 30, the head of Air Gates of the Northern Capital company Leonid Sergeyev told journalists that the authorities of St. Petersburg are considering a new scenario for the development of Pulkovo Airport.
According to him, the first phase of construction might start not with the southern gallery near the «Five Glasses» terminal, as previously assumed, but with the northern one. The new gallery will adjoin the main terminal and the international flights sector.
After the northern gallery is put into operation, domestic flights will be temporarily transferred to it. This will allow the construction of a modern terminal for domestic routes on the site of the current «Five Glasses».
The architecture of the new building will be styled after historic Soviet design, but the equipment is planned to meet modern standards.
As soon as domestic flights return to the renovated terminal, the northern gallery will be repurposed for servicing international routes.
According to Sergeyev, the initiator of revising the plans was Vice Governor of St. Petersburg Kirill Polyakov.
The northern gallery already appeared in previous airport expansion projects, but its construction was scheduled after the southern one. Earlier, during the discussion of land use and development rules, corresponding schemes and illustrations were published.
