Moscow utility workers have increased the temperature in the heating systems of residential buildings, kindergartens, schools, and other institutions, said Deputy Mayor of Moscow Pyotr Biryukov. This was done due to the approaching frost in the capital.

“According to weather forecasters, a sharp cold snap to -28 degrees Celsius (-18°F) is expected in the coming days, and therefore we have started to adjust the parameters of the heat supply system in advance. We are currently gradually increasing the temperature of the coolant,” he said.

Homes will not become warmer immediately: if the coolant temperature is raised sharply, an accident could occur. Pipes and radiators may not withstand rapid heating, which can cause cracks and bursts.

Emergency teams are also preparing for the upcoming frosts, and in case of pipe bursts, they will be able to quickly eliminate the consequences, Biryukov stated.

The road situation will also be continuously monitored. When snow begins to fall on the roads, all highways will be promptly cleared with snow removal equipment.

“Special attention will be paid to cleaning pedestrian zones, sidewalks, approaches to public transport stops, metro and Moscow Central Circle (MCC) stations, railway stations and platforms, transport hubs, and social facilities,” clarified the City Services Complex.

Earlier, due to a boiler house accident residents of Chekhov (Moscow region) lived without heating in their homes for more than two days during frosty nights. Hundreds of requests were left to the city administration to bring heaters into homes, and in some places, heat guns were placed in the stairwells.
