For several days now in Moscow and the region, daytime temperatures have been -10…-15°C (14…5°F), and at night they drop below -20°C (-4°F). According to meteorologist Tatyana Pozdnyakova, these figures are 10 degrees below normal.

In addition to the cold, the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS) warned today of heavy fog. It will persist at least until noon.

«At night, in the morning, and in the first half of the day on 5 February, fog with visibility of 200–700 meters and rime are expected in some parts of Moscow,» the MChS reported.

On Friday night, the temperature will be around -15°C (5°F), and during the day — -10…-12°C (14…10°F), Pozdnyakova said. On Saturday, it may rise to -7°C (19°F). The slight warming will bring icy conditions to the city«s streets. According to the forecast, light snowfall will continue in the coming days.

Incidentally, during the February frosts, the ice on Moscow«s rivers has increased by 2 to 5 cm over the week, reported meteorologist Mikhail Leus.

«The MChS»s weekly data on ice thickness on Moscow«s water bodies show that on the city»s rivers, ice thickness increased by 2–5 cm, in the bays of the Moscow River by 1–2 cm, and at the Khimki Reservoir by 4–5 cm as of 4 February 2026,« the expert reported in his Telegram channel »All About the Seas«.

In January, the height of snowdrifts in the city reached 61 centimeters, comparable to the record of 1994. And what will happen to all this snow when spring arrives? MSK1.RU asked hydrologists whether Moscow and the Moscow region will be flooded after the abnormal snowfalls.
