Moscow Court Upholds Detention of Volgograd Legal Official
The Moscow City Court has left Darya Kazankova, the head of the legal department of Volgograd city hall, in pre-trial detention. The appellate instance found no grounds for changing the preventive measure to a milder one.
The decision on the complaint was announced in the afternoon of Wednesday, January 21. The presiding judge left unchanged the decision of the Meshchansky District Court, which had arrested the municipal official suspected of abuse of authority resulting in grave consequences.
Recall that information about the detention of Darya Kazankova appeared on the afternoon of December 17 in the anonymous Telegram channel «Volgograd Rumors». The authors link this, among other things, to the arrival last week of employees from the General Prosecutor«s Office of Russia.
«According to people who know Kazankova closely, she never gave the impression of a person prone to adventures or corruption schemes. A strict lawyer, a pedant, whose documents were always in perfect order. That is why the detention came as a surprise even to those who have long been observing the backroom life of the city hall,» the authors report. «According to one version, the case may be linked to the ongoing inspection by the General Prosecutor«s Office. Entrepreneurs and other interested parties, in the course of communicating with high-ranking employees of the supervisory agency, have begun actively sharing information — checks on these facts are in full swing.»
On December 18, on the website of the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow, a case appeared regarding the selection of a preventive measure in the form of detention for Darya Kazankova«s full namesake. Simultaneously, information appeared there about the arrest of the chairman of the Regional Committee for Nature (Oblkompriroda) Alexei Sivokoz and his former deputy Irina Panina. The court granted the investigation»s motions, while classifying the information on the cases.
It is known that Sivokoz and Panina have also appealed the decisions of the Meshchansky District Court on the selection of a preventive measure in the form of arrest, but there is no information on the cases reaching the appellate instance.
