According to statistics, mortality from respiratory system diseases in the city reached 46.4 cases per 100,000 population by 2024. Back in 2019, this figure was 18.6 cases.
Information about the deterioration of the situation became known on January 27 from the passport of the regional program «Strengthening Health.» The growth of the indicator has been consistent throughout all years after the pandemic.
At the same time, the overall structure of causes of death in St. Petersburg is changing. The share of the main ones — circulatory system diseases, oncological diseases, and external causes — is decreasing. Before the pandemic, they accounted for more than 84% of deaths, and in 2023–2024, about 80%.
The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the long-term positive trend of decreasing overall mortality, which was observed from 2004 to 2019. In 2020–2021, the number of deaths in the city sharply increased, reaching a peak in 2021.
Although in 2022–2023 the indicator decreased, preliminary data for 2024 indicates a new increase. In 2024, 110.9 thousand people died, which is more than 107.3 thousand in 2023.
