Monument to Rimsky-Korsakov Restored in St. Petersburg

The Museum of Urban Sculpture announced the completion of the restoration of the composer's monument on Theater Square. Citizens will soon be able to see the updated monument.

Restoration work on the monument to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg has been completed. The Museum of Urban Sculpture announced this on 23 January.

The monument, located on Theater Square, is an object of cultural heritage of federal significance. It was installed in 1952, and last restored in 2008. The current repair began in October 2025.

In accordance with the technological regulations, the contractor performed a set of operations:

  • cleaning surfaces from contamination and traces of previous repairs;
  • filling minor stone losses with mastic containing granite chips;
  • removal of lime deposits and filling small cracks by injection;
  • fixing a chipped corner with glue;
  • grinding the stone surface, filling seams with a special solution, and chasing with rolled lead;
  • applying waterproofing with a cement-lime mortar.

The bronze sculpture was cleaned of wax deposits, the patina was consolidated, and the surface was preserved with wax.

According to data from the Unified Information System «Procurement», the contract for restoration was concluded for an amount of 9.9 million rubles (approximately $99,000 at current rates). The executor of the work was ZAO «Restoration Project Scientific Center Specialist».

Examination and development of project documentation were carried out in 2024 under a contract worth 3.1 million rubles (approximately $31,000 at current rates).
