Meteorologist Alexander Kolesov made a statement on weather prospects on January 25. According to him, a brief warm-up is expected in St. Petersburg, after which frosts will return.
The precise temperature forecast is currently complicated by cloud influence. Today, in the central districts of the city, the temperature does not exceed -13°C (9°F), while in the south of St. Petersburg, frosts down to -20°C (-4°F) are possible. In Leningrad Oblast, temperature distribution is also uneven: in the southern territories, thermometers show around -23°C (-9°F), whereas in the north of the oblast, it is only -11°C (12°F).
As Kolesov noted, it is not yet determined which day will be the coldest — January 25 or 26. On the night from Sunday to Monday, the temperature in the city center may drop to -15°C (5°F). The week will begin with light snow and a brief temperature increase.
«The main trend of future weather is the continuation of winter and the persistence of frosts. To date, the anticyclone is winning, constantly reviving and drawing cold masses back into our region,» said Alexander Kolesov.
The beginning of February is also expected to be frosty. Significant precipitation is not forecast in the near future. «We are not taking into account the light snow from stratus clouds that constantly falls,» added the meteorologist.
