Yury Shalabayev, the mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, personally drove along city highways during rush hour to assess the situation during the snowfall. He shared his impressions from the trip on his Telegram channel.
According to the mayor, the situation on the roads is difficult but expected. Over two days of bad weather, about 20 cm (8 in) of snow fell, and on Thursday, another 25 cm (10 in) of precipitation could be added.
«Of course, in such conditions, it takes more time to get home and to work. A similar picture may persist for several more days until we deal with the aftermath of the bad weather after it ends,» Shalabayev wrote.
To avoid worsening the already serious traffic jams, special equipment is not being sent to the streets during peak hours. Snow clearance will begin when traffic intensity decreases. Meanwhile, cleaning equipment will operate around the clock.
In the evening, traffic jams with an intensity of 10 points were recorded in Nizhny Novgorod.
