Light pillars appear in Yaroslavl region

Residents of the Yaroslavl region spotted light pillars. They noticed the rare phenomenon on the evening of February 3 around 8:00 PM. The light pillars were visible in Yaroslavl, Rybinsk, Danilovsky District, and the settlement of Borisoglebsky.

Amateur astronomer and senior lecturer at the Faculty of Physics of P. G. Demidov Yaroslavl State University Nikolai Fomichev previously explained that this phenomenon is similar to a solar halo. In severe frost, ice crystals form in the air, which refract sunlight, creating glowing rings or pillars around the solar disk.

If several light pillars are observed simultaneously, their sources are most often artificial objects, such as streetlights.

Recall that light pillars in the Yaroslavl region were also spotted in early January 2026.

Specialists from the Phobos center reported when the frosts in the region will subside and the cold will give way to warming.
