Legendary Buran spacecraft displayed in museum near Yekaterinburg
An exhibition featuring the Buran spacecraft has opened at the Museum Complex in Verkhnyaya Pyshma near Yekaterinburg. This is the third flight model, developed as part of the «Energia–Buran» program and the only one preserved in Russia.
The video shows the location where the Buran spacecraft is now on display.
The spacecraft, designated Buran 2.01, was planned to be named «Baikal», but the name was never painted on the hull. Construction was not completed due to lack of funding, and in 1993 its readiness was estimated at 30–50%.
The vehicle never went to space, but it traveled a long journey across Russia. It was transported from the town of Medyn in Kaluga Oblast to the Urals over the course of a month. The transport was partly by water, and on highways, to allow the passage of the oversized load, oncoming traffic was cleared, road signs were removed, and wires were lifted.
The new museum pavilion is dedicated to the history of space exploration, the world«s first unmanned flight, and the large-scale Soviet project of the reusable transport space system »Energia–Buran«.
