Krasnoyarsk's Triumphal Arch and Peace Square to Be Completely Redesigned

The Krasnoyarsk Triumphal Arch on Strelka will be relocated, its appearance completely changed, and given «new meaning.» The entire Peace Square is also slated for improvement, according to the city«s urban development department press service.

The municipal enterprise «Krasgorpark» began searching for a contractor on January 23 to develop a project and cost estimate, NGS24.RU reported. The starting price for the procurement is 4.5 million rubles (approx. $50,000 at current rates). According to the tender lot, the landmark will be renamed the Arch of the 400th Anniversary of Krasnoyarsk. The arch on Strelka was opened in 2003 and is currently named for the city«s 375th anniversary (in addition to the city»s anniversary, it is dedicated to soldiers who died in the Great Patriotic War). It was partially reconstructed in 2018.

According to the Peace Square improvement concept, the arch will be moved closer to Karatanov Street.

The new arch will be dedicated to the founders of the Krasnoyarsk ostrog (fort), particularly Andrei Dubensky, and the connection between generations (it is believed that Krasnoyarsk began from Strelka). The Triumphal Arch will serve as a «portal of time,» as described in the reconstruction concept. It will feature lighting, musical accompaniment, and dynamic inscriptions. On May 9 (Victory Day), these inscriptions are proposed to be changed to commemorate the holiday.
The arch will be equipped with motion sensors, cameras, and other sensors. «The installation of special equipment will add interactivity to the object on weekends and during events: the movement of the projection on the arch, its color, and the triggering of sound effects will depend on the intensity of the human flow,» the concept details.
A separate project and cost estimate documentation for the improvement of Peace Square will also be developed under the order of «Krasgorpark.» The starting price of this procurement is 50.5 million rubles (approx. $560,000). By the city«s 400th anniversary, the space is to become Krasnoyarsk»s main square, the urban development department states.
The results of both tenders are scheduled to be announced on February 11. The arch project must be developed within six months of signing a contract, while the deadline for the Peace Square project is specific: August 31.
Last summer, NGS24.RU reported that an underground historical complex is planned to be built beneath Peace Square.
