Yuri Roshchevsky, a local historian, ecologist, and ethnographer, has died in Samara, the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society reported.
«It is with deep sorrow that we announce the untimely death of Yuri Konstantinovich Roshchevsky, an outstanding local historian, ecologist, ethnographer, Candidate of Biological Sciences, researcher at the Institute of Ecology of the Volga Basin of the Russian Academy of Sciences, our true friend and colleague. He fought a long battle with illness, but unfortunately it proved stronger,» RGS staff said.
Yuri Konstantinovich was a man of encyclopedic knowledge and inexhaustible energy, whose entire life was dedicated to science and his native land. His many years of selfless work were devoted to studying, preserving, and protecting the unique nature of the Samara Bend.
He generously shared his discoveries through scientific works, engaging lectures, photographs, and publications. His research on the ecosystems of the Volga Basin, the traditional culture of the Volga region peoples, and the historical heritage of the region became a foundation for new generations of researchers.
«We mourn together with his family, loved ones, friends, and all who were fortunate to know this wise, kind, and passionate man. The bright memory of Yuri Konstantinovich Roshchevsky — a true knight of science and guardian of the Samara land — will forever remain in our hearts,» RGS says.
