In an interview on the red carpet, Kehlani stated: «I wanted to say »fuck ICE«.» She added that it would have been «meaningless» for her not to speak out when so many influential people had gathered together.

The singer, dressed in a black dress, complemented her look with a pin that read «ICE OUT».

Alex Pretti was killed by an ICE agent on January 24.

After receiving the award for best R&B song and best R&B performance, Kehlani spoke out against ICE again. «Together we are stronger, and we must speak out against all injustice in the world,» she said, calling on other artists to join the protest.
Kehlani mentioned two incidents: the killings of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, which occurred in January in Minneapolis and were related to the actions of ICE agents.
On January 7, Renee Nicole Good was stopped by ICE agents. When asked to get out of the car, she tried to reverse and turn around. Agent Jonathan Ross, who was nearby, fired three shots and fatally wounded her.
Authorities, including Donald Trump, defended the agent«s actions, claiming he acted in self-defense, and stated that Good hit Ross, who was then treated at the hospital.
On January 24, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, was killed. He was filming ICE agents who pushed a woman, and he stepped between them. He was pepper-sprayed, knocked to the ground, and killed. It was reported that Pretti might have had a weapon, but there was no evidence that he intended to harm the officers.
In a statement, Pretti«s family expressed bitterness and anger, accusing the administration of »lies« and stating that Alex did not hold a weapon at the time of the attack, but was trying to protect the woman.
