Earlier this year, the singer announced her departure from the Church of Scientology. As media reported, she published a candid essay in which she claimed the church was «slowly destroying» her.

Villa stated that she came to Scientology not as a «lost nobody seeking significance.» «I entered as a purposeful woman, raised in faith, seeking truth, healing, and purpose,» she said. «I grew up in Christianity. I loved Jesus. And Scientology told me I could keep Him. This lie kept me inside for fifteen years.»

According to the singer, by the time she left, she had donated «almost two million dollars» to the church. «I gave my time, my labor, my voice, my platform, and my influence,» she said. «For years, I lived at the Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, trained at the highest levels, and became one of their most prominent success stories as a successful actress and singer.»

Villa also claimed that Scientology used her image everywhere as an example of the religion«s effectiveness. Although she had number-one hits and attended the Grammys, she stated that the church »took credit for all achievements.« »Every achievement was attributed not to God, not to talent, not to perseverance, but to auditing, donations, and loyalty to the organization. My success became propaganda. My life turned into marketing.«

She criticized Scientology, calling it «not a self-help system, but a control system.» Villa added that she «broke down» inside the organization and will never return to it.

In response to Villa«s statements, the Church of Scientology said that when she came, they helped her cope with deep personal difficulties. »She has gone out of control again and is now trying to use those who supported her in her darkest moments, hoping to make money. How unchristian,« they said. The church called on Villa to stop »false statements.«

The church also emphasized that they remain committed to helping people in spiritual growth and are a worldwide force for good, inviting the public to learn more on their official website.
