Heavy Snowfall of Up to 70 cm Forecast for Nizhny Novgorod

The snowfall is expected to last for several days
Mayor of Nizhny Novgorod Yuri Shalabayev warned residents about an approaching heavy snowfall via his Telegram channel.
The snowfall will begin on Tuesday, January 27, and last for several days, during which more than 70 cm (2.3 ft) of precipitation may fall.
“In the next 4 days, more than 70 cm of snow could fall! Given that 171% of the monthly norm has already fallen this month, this January has certainly staked its claim among the snowiest,” the mayor wrote.
According to him, Nizhny Novgorod has already surpassed Moscow and Kazan in terms of snowfall. During the New Year holidays, the region already experienced heavy snowfalls, when over two days snowdrifts piled up to 50 cm (1.6 ft) high.
Shalabayev noted that snow removal on weekdays will be hampered by heavy traffic. During morning and evening peak hours, equipment will not be able to operate at full capacity to avoid creating additional problems on the roads.
“The rest of the time will be used to the maximum, working around the clock. ATI (the city«s transport and infrastructure agency) will continue to monitor the work of DUKs (district utility companies) and TSZh (homeowners» associations), which during the last snowfall allowed a number of serious shortcomings,” the mayor emphasized.
He also appealed to drivers to park their cars in a way that does not hinder snow removal, and if possible, to refrain from using personal transport during the blizzard.
As for February, forecasters predict precipitation above average monthly levels, but without severe frosts. The average temperature is expected to be -6...-9°C (21...16°F), which is one degree higher than usual.
