Half of Foreign Students in Tomsk Are From Kazakhstan

Regional data indicates that male students outnumber females in Tomsk«s higher education institutions.
Tomsk universities have 68,000 students, one in six of whom are foreigners. Most are young people from Kazakhstan, China, and Uzbekistan, according to the Tomskstat press service.
“At the start of the 2025/2026 academic year, 96.1 thousand people were studying in Tomsk Oblast. Of these, 68.6 thousand were receiving higher education, and 27.5 thousand were in secondary vocational education,” the report stated.
This academic year, the number of students increased: it grew by 1.6%. The number of those wanting to study at universities rose by 1.7 thousand, while at colleges it decreased by 0.2 thousand.
Among students, there are more young men than young women (51.6% and 48.4% respectively).
One in six students at Tomsk universities is a foreigner. The largest shares among them are: citizens of Kazakhstan (47.2% or 5.4 thousand people), China (20.6% or 2.4 thousand people), Uzbekistan (10.5% or 1.2 thousand people), India (7.6% or 0.9 thousand people), and Kyrgyzstan (3.9% or 0.4 thousand people).
