Giant Hernia Operated on at Dzhanelidze Institute

The man was admitted to the clinic on the eve of the New Year holidays. The formation, measuring 40 × 50 × 40 cm (about 16 × 20 × 16 inches), contained almost the entire intestine, had descended into the scrotum, and severely hindered movement. The operation was performed by specialists from the first surgical department under the guidance of Professor Andrey Demko. Despite the complexity of the case, the patient was discharged in satisfactory condition on the ninth day. The clinical case was reported only after confidence in the absence of long-term complications.

Surgeon Denis Sakhno explained the mechanism of such pathology: «Inguinal hernias form due to weakness of the inguinal canal and increased pressure in the abdominal cavity. This leads to protrusion of the intestine or other organs into the scrotum through the inguinal area.»
According to the doctor, the main danger of inguinal-scrotal hernias is the risk of strangulation, which can cause organ necrosis and even death. «Our patient was lucky; he did not have strangulation, and overall, organ function was not impaired,» Sakhno noted.
The technically challenging task was to return the intestinal loops to their anatomical place without a large-scale incision of the abdominal wall. After that, the surgeons restored normal anatomy and reinforced the area with a mesh implant to prevent recurrence.
Doctors recommend seeking help at the early stages of hernia development, when it does not yet affect the quality of life and does not carry the risk of serious complications.
