Garbage pile-up frustrates Nizhny Novgorod residents

Last week, Nizhny Novgorod was hit by heavy snowfall, the consequences of which residents are still facing. In some yards, garbage has not been collected for several consecutive days, causing container sites to gradually turn into dumps. Readers shared photos of littered areas with NN.RU.

Complaints about poor collection (or rather its absence) come from different parts of the city. In the Sovetsky district, the problem is observed in the Vysokovo residential complex on Respublikanskaya Street, near building no. 6 on 60th Anniversary of October Boulevard, and in the courtyards of Timiryazeva and Nevzorovykh streets.

In the Avtozavodsky district, garbage has not been collected from Shnitnikova Street (buildings no. 5, 3, and 1) and Strokin Street (building no. 10). In the Nizhny Novgorod district, waste has been accumulating for a week at the address Usilova, 2. Additionally, piles of garbage have formed near building no. 7 on Suetinskaya Street.

«Ulitsa Dargomyzhskogo, 4 and 6. Garbage has not been collected for more than 4 days. On the morning of February 4, a tractor was used to move garbage in a bucket, while all unpackaged waste scattered down the street. What and why — the workers did not answer. When a garbage truck will come — no answer either,» — a message we received from a resident of the Leninsky district.

«Surikova, between buildings 2 and 6. The dump has been piled up to the roof,» — complained a resident of Prioksky district.

Responsibility for order at container sites falls on house management companies, while collection is handled by the regional operator Nizheko-logiya (subordinate to the regional Ministry of Ecology). As previously noted by the organization, snow on the approaches to containers and the surrounding area hinders garbage trucks. To speed up work, the operator deploys its own snow-clearing equipment into courtyards.

«The difficulty of collection lies in the fact that snow is cleared in courtyards for the passage of cars, but specialized equipment is much wider and heavier, so the likelihood of getting stuck is much higher. Also, parking of cars, especially at turns and in narrow places, prevents the maneuver of a garbage truck. Moreover, snow is plowed to container sites, causing the bins themselves to remain dug into the snow. Each bin weighs over 100 kg, and it is impossible and very difficult to roll it out through the thick snow,» — representatives of Nizheko-logiya stated on their official social media page.

Nevertheless, under the post, many write that driveways in their yards are cleaned daily and there are no obstacles for specialized equipment. The Nizhny Novgorod mayor’s office also reports that main roads are cleared down to asphalt, and road services are operating in an enhanced mode.

Meanwhile, snowfall may return to Nizhny Novgorod very soon. According to Mayor Yury Shalabaev, the upcoming weekend promises to be quite snowy.
