Frosts Down to -33°C Expected in Nizhny Novgorod Region

The Civil Defense and Emergency Situations Department of Nizhny Novgorod has warned of a severe cold snap expected on the night of February 4. According to operational forecasts, air temperatures in some areas of the Nizhny Novgorod Region could drop to -33°C (-27°F).

According to meteorologists, nighttime temperatures in the region will be around -29°C (-20°F), while daytime readings will warm to -17°C to -22°C (1°F to -8°F). In some areas, light snow and ice are possible. The cold weather will persist on February 5 and 6, with nighttime frosts down to -25°C (-13°F).

During the frosts, the likelihood of fires and emergencies at energy supply and utilities facilities increases. The company Nizhnovenergo has put its units on high alert. For rapid response, 136 teams have been prepared, including over 600 specialists.

The press service of Nizhnovenergo noted: «Energy workers urge residents to be vigilant and cautious; if broken power lines are discovered, under no circumstances approach them, but report to the energy company or the Ministry of Emergency Situations department.»

The period of abnormally cold weather continues in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The average daily air temperature is 7-14 degrees below the climatic norm, which for the region is -9°C to -13°C (16°F to 9°F).
