On January 23, Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Boris Piotrovsky demonstrated design solutions for the restoration of Fort Emperor Alexander I, also known as the «Plague Fort».
«Fort Emperor Alexander I has been returned to its historical facade color — «beige granite». Based on archival drawings, a wooden observation tower — an exact copy of the non-preserved hexagonal pavilion from the late 19th century — has been recreated and installed,» Piotrovsky stated.
The full completion of the restoration is planned for the period up to 2027.
After that, observation decks will be opened in the fort, and inside will house the Museum of the History of the Fight Against Infectious Diseases.
The vice-governor noted that the presented design solutions are preliminary and will be refined.
Fort Emperor Alexander I is located on an artificial island near the museum-historical park «Island of Forts». The defensive structure was built in the early 19th century. For 18 years before the revolution, it was used as a laboratory for plague research.
Earlier, it was reported that work began on laying a water pipeline to the fort.
In addition, in September it became known that the site will become a location for filming the show «Fort. Return of the Legend» on the CTS television channel.
