Emergency Services in Volgograd Oblast Warn of Weather Deterioration

Specialists from the Volgograd hydrometeorological center and the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) announced a sharp deterioration in weather conditions. The extreme cold, during which temperatures fell to -30°C (-22°F), will be followed by a sharp warming accompanied by freezing rain and gusts of hurricane-force wind.
«On the morning of 28 January, continuing through the end of the day and into 29 January, a complex of adverse weather phenomena is expected in the territory of Volgograd Oblast—black ice, ice and frost deposits combined with strong winds of 15–20 meters per second,» the emergency warning from the weather and rescue departments states.
EMERCOM advises people to avoid traveling by personal vehicle if possible, especially over long distances. It is also recommended not to wear high-heeled shoes or keep hands in pockets. To prevent falls on ice, sandpaper glued to shoe soles can be used.
