Emergency Ministry Warns of Abnormal Frosts in Nizhny Novgorod Region

According to the Upper Volga Hydrometeorological Service, abnormally cold weather is forecast for the Nizhny Novgorod region from January 31 to February 5. The average daily air temperatures will be 7-14 degrees below the long-term norm, which for this period ranges from -9 to -13 degrees Celsius (16 to 9°F).
During the weekend in Nizhny Novgorod, thermometers will drop to -20 degrees Celsius (-4°F). The most severe frosts, down to -26 degrees Celsius (-15°F), will arrive at the beginning of next week, on February 3 and 4. The weather will be cloudy with possible light snowfalls.
Rescuers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) note that severe frosts increase the risk of accidents in utility and energy systems. Increased load on power grids may lead to a rise in the number of fires. The department recommends that citizens adhere to safety rules:
- If possible, avoid long walks and trips;
- Do not use homemade or faulty electrical appliances;
- Do not leave switched-on electric heaters and lit stoves unattended;
- Do not use gas stoves to heat rooms.
Currently, snowy weather persists in Nizhny Novgorod. Mayor Yuri Shalabaev reported that more than 25 centimeters (10 inches) of snow may fall on January 29.
