From 31 January to 5 February, abnormally cold weather is expected in Nizhny Novgorod Region. The average air temperature will be 7–14 degrees Celsius (13–25°F) below the climatic norm (which for our region is -9 to -13°C or 16–9°F), the Upper Volga Department for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring warned.

According to forecasters, a cold snap down to -20°C (-4°F) is expected in Nizhny Novgorod over the weekend. Next week—on 3 and 4 February—frosts will bring temperatures down to -26°C (-15°F). The weather will be cloudy, with light snowfall expected.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) reminded that during severe cold, the likelihood of emergencies related to failures in utility and energy systems increases. Due to the high load on the power supply, an increase in the number of fires is expected. The department recommends:

avoid long walks and trips if possible;

  • do not use homemade or faulty electrical appliances;

  • do not leave switched-on electric heaters and stoked stoves unattended;

  • do not use gas stoves for heating.

    Snowy weather persists in Nizhny Novgorod for now. According to Mayor Yury Shalabayev, more than 25 centimeters (10 inches) of snow could fall today.
