On the morning of January 27, the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) for Volgograd Oblast issued an emergency warning about abnormal frosts. Rescuers report that extremely low temperatures will persist for at least 24 hours.
The peak of the cold snap is expected on the evening of Tuesday, January 27. The warning states: «From 16:00 to 18:00 on January 27 and 28, abnormally cold weather is expected in the northern half of Volgograd Oblast, — warn the rescuers. — The average daily temperature will drop 10-14 degrees below normal.»
For public safety, EMERCOM gives the following recommendations:
- If possible, stay home and avoid going outside without urgent need;
- When going out, use warm and comfortable clothing;
- Periodically enter warm premises, such as shops or entrances;
- Thoroughly protect exposed body parts from frost — hands, ears, and nose;
- Absolutely avoid alcohol consumption, as it creates an illusion of warmth and promotes hypothermia.
According to meteorologists, the cold snap will be short-lived. Already in the afternoon of January 28, the air temperature will rise to 5-10 degrees below zero (23 to 14°F), and in some places warm up to minus one degree (30°F). In Volgograd, thermometers will show about 4 degrees of frost (25°F).
