At Perinatal Center No. 1 in Volzhsky, a satellite city of Volgograd, a true hero was born on February 4. The baby weighed 7 kilograms 60 grams (about 15.6 pounds) and measured 70 centimeters (about 27.6 inches). The child is not the first in the family — older brother and sister are waiting for the new resident of Volzhsky at home.

According to the Health Committee of the Volgograd Region (Komitet Zdravookhraneniya Volgogradskoy Oblasti), the baby was born naturally, and the condition of both the child and the mother is currently satisfactory. Another large baby born at the same medical facility came into the world in 2024 and weighed 4 kg 150 g (about 9.15 pounds).

Tatiana Verovskaya, the chief freelance obstetrician-gynecologist of the committee, said that the birth of such a large baby can be dangerous for both the child and the mother:

— The spontaneous birth of a 7-kilogram baby is truly a miraculous wonder, because in reality, the birth of a large fetus weighing more than 5 kilograms always carries great risks for the mother in terms of uterine and perineal tears, as well as colossal risks for the child. With spontaneous delivery, a complication such as shoulder dystocia — delayed delivery of the shoulders — often occurs, which is dangerous due to hypoxia. A clinically narrow maternal pelvis is a situation that can really threaten uterine rupture and asphyxia of the child, — says Tatiana Verovskaya.

The doctor says that the birth of such a large baby is a deviation from the norm and may indicate health problems in the mother:

— Most often this happens when mothers have diabetes, gestational or regular, and extremely, extremely rarely — when there are some constitutional features. As a rule, the cause is still maternal diabetes, — says Dr. Verovskaya. — It is precisely with this that large babies develop. I cannot say anything about the condition of this baby, since I do not have data on his tests or those of his mother. I want to believe that the baby is healthy, and I wish him and his mother a speedy recovery.
