Maher criticized Lemon«s detention, calling it part of a trend to suppress dissent. When an audience member supported the arrest with applause, the host sharply objected: »Arresting him is a bad idea!«

The most acute discussion flared up between TV host Joe Scarborough and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Scarborough stated that this case is an attempt to intimidate journalists and criminalize reporting from tense protest actions.

Greene claimed that Lemon broke the law by entering the church during a service.

«If you are Don Lemon and say: »I«m not with them, I»m interested in what you think?« — that is journalism,» Scarborough quoted his own words. He also pointed to the unusual legal path of the case, noting that several judges initially refused to bring charges until the Department of Justice revived them.
«There is no doubt that this was meant to scare other reporters,» said Scarborough. He referred to the opinion of a judge in Minnesota who called the charges untenable, and then to the decision of Pam Bondi to independently bring them, which, he said, shows instruction from the administration.
Greene rejected Scarborough«s arguments and stated that she »fully supports« Lemon»s arrest. «This is not journalism. It is activism,» she said, asserting that reporters are not protected by the First Amendment when «chasing people right into church.»
According to her, Lemon crossed a legal boundary by entering the church during a worship service and interfering with the religious freedom of parishioners. Greene also recalled her previous encounter with Lemon, after which, she said, Capitol Police intervention was required.
The arrest is related to a protest against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) service, which occurred earlier this month at Cities Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Protesters interrupted the service, speaking out against the pastor«s role as a high-ranking ICE employee. Lemon was present there, covering the protest, which later became the basis for federal charges under laws protecting access to places of worship and conspiracy.
Scarborough warned that blurring the line between confrontational journalism and criminal behavior could set a dangerous precedent, as journalists increasingly cover protests and law enforcement actions.
Lemon was released on bail without monetary deposit on Friday, January 30, and denies his guilt. «I have devoted my entire career to covering news,» he stated after his release. «And I won»t stop now.«
Maher eventually tried to defuse the situation with a joke, proposing a milder version of the charge. «Maybe just charge him with behaving inappropriately?» he joked.
