Five deputies from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) have registered a proposal with the office of the Leningrad Oblast Legislative Assembly to rename the St. Petersburg metro station Devyatkino.
If supported by the regional parliament, the proposal will be sent to St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov for a final decision.
The station, located in Leningrad Oblast, was commissioned in 1978 under the name Komsomolskaya. In the early 1990s, it was renamed Devyatkino, taking the name of the nearby railway platform.
In the proposal, the deputies stated that the original name was given in honor of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League (Komsomol), which made a significant contribution to the development of industry and transport infrastructure in Leningrad Oblast and Leningrad.
«The new name is predominantly geographical in nature and does not reflect the significance of the station as one of the key transport hubs,» the initiators explained.
CPRF faction leader Ivan Apostolevsky said that the idea of returning the historical name is an innovation, since «the station was renamed for unknown reasons at that time.»
In 2017, public activists from St. Petersburg had already made a similar proposal.
