Chibis questioned on waste management and new production in region

At a press conference, Governor Andrey Chibis was asked about waste processing in the Murmansk region, and how it will be arranged after the bankruptcy of JSC «TKO TBO Plant».

The head of the region answered that currently waste goes to the ecotechnopark in Mezhdurechye, where it is sorted. What is compacted is landfilled.

— The corresponding sorting facilities have been operating for more than a year. Perhaps there can be situations when someone cheats the regional operator, but overall the system works this way. We at one time made a decision that part of the waste would go to the waste incineration plant, but the plant had the obligation to build a waste sorting station to extract waste for recycling and burn the rest. A system was developed so that part of the heat from incineration would go for heating, — said Chibis.

At first the system worked. But the plant never built the sorting station:

— When we saw that the investment program was not being fulfilled, we removed the money from the tariff. They stupidly failed the entire project. The owner, with a not unknown surname, has failed more than one project in our region. Thank God that the other assets have passed to conscientious investors. I hope this one will too.

The governor hopes that an investor will be found who will buy the plant at auction, and the government will have an alternative to the current landfill for waste management.

— As for the lawsuit of the bankruptcy manager against the Ministry of Energy: that«s complete nonsense. A counterclaim will be prepared. We fulfilled our obligations completely, but unfortunately, the owner turned out to be incapable of doing what he was obliged to do, — said Chibis.

Recall, the TKO TBO Plant has repeatedly faced financial problems, and in February 2025 announced plans for bankruptcy.
