Blogger Shares Tips for Safe Epiphany Ice Bathing

Yekaterinburg blogger and dancer Svetlana Ananas (real surname Bonor) has shared with E1.RU how to prepare correctly for the Epiphany ice baths, scheduled for January 18–19. She cautioned that this practice of «washing away sins» is not suitable for everyone.

Svetlana has been taking part in the ice hole immersions for a decade and prepares for Epiphany throughout the year, including cold water pouring in summer and contrast showers at home.
“It charges me with positive energy. I don«t recommend diving into the ice hole without preparation because it won»t save us from our sins; only good deeds can do that. It«s not really about health since the water is very cold, the body undergoes stress, and you must prepare ahead,” said the blogger.

She advises beginners to start with contrast showers at home, as the body will gradually adapt to the hardening process.
“If you«re ready for the dip, always bring warm socks, clothing, and a towel. Don»t approach the water barefoot. Stay in the ice hole for no more than five seconds, and it«s best to avoid submerging your head. After getting out, dry off with a towel, put on warm clothes, and drink tea—no alcohol,” Ananas added.

The blogger advises against taking risks and recommends that those who feel unprepared for extreme temperatures avoid the ice bath.
“Our bodies might not be ready, and we can«t predict their response. Warming up in a sauna before plunging into an ice hole isn»t always advisable. There should always be someone nearby for safety. People who have suffered a heart attack or stroke are prohibited from ice hole bathing, as are pregnant women and children,” Svetlana explained.
