Blockade bread distributed in Yekaterinburg to commemorate Leningrad siege

A 125-gram bread portion that was the daily ration for besieged Leningrad residents.
On January 27, events dedicated to the 82nd anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the blockade were held in Yekaterinburg. Citizens honored the memory of the victims with a minute of silence.

At Labor Square, students from the Sverdlovsk Regional Medical College, together with volunteers, organized a tent camp. Here, everyone could receive a tiny piece of black bread weighing 125 grams (about 4.4 ounces) and learn about the feat of the besieged city«s residents.

«Today, we handed out a tiny portion of black bread to every participant of the event — only 125 grams. This was exactly the daily ration for the residents of besieged Leningrad, which became almost the only source of meager nutrition,» said Irina Levina, chair of the Sverdlovsk regional branch of the Russian Red Cross.

According to her, in just the first hours, more than a thousand Yekaterinburg residents took part in the event, thus connecting with the history of the blockade.

Svetlana Trenikhina, Minister of Education of Sverdlovsk Region, added that during the Great Patriotic War, many Leningraders were evacuated to the region, and some military productions were relocated.
