Appeal court in Sochi receives complaints from Pak's lawyers

The Third Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction in Sochi has received appeal complaints from lawyers representing Alexander Pak, who was sentenced to 11 years in a penal colony for the murder of a person in connection with the performance of public duty. The verdict was issued by the Volgograd Regional Court at the end of November last year.
The accident, in which a mother of several children, Yekaterina Buravlyova, was run over by an expensive BMW crossover, occurred on October 22, 2024, on Bolshaya Street near the private boarding school «Sozvezdiye» (Constellation). The Ministry of Internal Affairs briefly stated the official version of what happened.
«According to preliminary information, at 15:05, the driver of a BMW opposite house No. 38 on Bolshaya Street hit a pedestrian and then fled the scene of the accident,» the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported. «Subsequently, the offender was detained. As a result of the accident, the pedestrian was taken to a medical facility.»
According to information from relatives, everything happened near the private boarding school «Sozvezdiye» (Constellation). According to preliminary and unofficially unconfirmed data, the BMW driver cut off the woman, in response to which she got out of her car and reprimanded him, and he ran her over in front of the children.
The woman was initially taken to City Clinical Hospital No. 25, but later transferred to Moscow, to the Sklifosovsky Research Institute, but it was not possible to save Yekaterina Buravlyova. Initially, a criminal case was initiated under point «b» of part 2 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, «Violation of traffic rules, resulting through negligence in causing serious harm to human health, coupled with leaving the scene of an accident.» Later, the case was reclassified under point «b» of part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – murder of a person or their relatives in connection with the performance of official duties or public duty.
By the verdict of the Volgograd Regional Court, Alexander Pak was found guilty of the crime he was charged with and sentenced to 11 years in a strict-regime colony, subsequent restriction of freedom for one year, a three-year ban on activities related to driving vehicles, and a fine of 5 million rubles (approximately $55,600 at current rates).
Later, the verdict was appealed. Four complaints were filed by lawyers of the convicted Alexander Pak, and another appellate submission was filed by the prosecutor. On January 14, all complaints were transferred to the higher court, and the day before, the documents were accepted by the chancellery of the Third Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction and assigned to Judge Dmitry Ponomarenko. The start date of the hearings has not yet been set.
