Chief meteorologist of St. Petersburg Alexander Kolesov reported on the anomalous cold that has come to the Leningrad Region. The frosty weather has set in due to clear skies in an anticyclone.
On 29 January, temperatures in the east of the region range from -15°C (5°F) to -18°C (0°F). Over the next 4–5 days, the average daily temperature will remain at this level. Western districts are also expecting severe frosts.
In St. Petersburg, the situation is somewhat better: thanks to warm air from Lake Ladoga, it will be less cold here. Nevertheless, nights will remain frosty, with thermometer readings dropping to -20°C (-4°F) and below.
«There is a possibility in the development of atmospheric processes that cloudiness will come to our region tomorrow or the day after, but the weather will still remain cold, and it will only warm up slightly in some places,» Kolesov noted.
According to the meteorologist«s forecast, the frosts will only begin to retreat after 2 February.
